WIC

What is WIC?

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a special supplemental nutrition program which provides services like:

  • Nutrition education and counseling
  • Free, supplemental food using an eWIC card
  • Health screenings and risk assessments
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Breast pump loan program
  • Referrals to health care and community resources

Who is WIC For?

Eligibility for WIC is based on nutritional risk and income eligibility. Only the following people may be eligible to receive WIC benefits and services:

Pregnant Women

You can apply for WIC as soon as you learn you are pregnant.

Data shows that pregnant women who participate in the WIC program have fewer low birth weight babies, experience fewer infant deaths, see the doctor earlier in pregnancy and eat healthier.

Breastfeeding & Postpartum Women

Postpartum is up to six months after delivery.

Our WIC staff includes a breastfeeding peer counselor that teaches new and soon-to-be moms about breastfeeding and supports them through their journey.

Children up to 5 years old

Any type of legal guardian is able to apply on behalf of a child in this age range. This includes dads, moms, grandparents, foster parents and more.

Applicants must live in the state in which they apply and meet income guidelines or be on Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF.

Peer Counselor Candice Cox is a mother of four who loves crafting, reading, plants, and all things outdoors with her family. She is very passionate about breastfeeding and looks forward to supporting you in your journey. She can be reached at 417-262-2390 or via email at ccox@bartonmohealth.gov

Peer Counselor Jackie Heinen is a mom of two who enjoys sewing, gardening, and spending time with her family. She jokingly says she’s in her “grandma era” because she loves cozy, creative hobbies and supporting moms to shamelessly breastfeed! She can be reached at 417-262-2333 or email at jackie.heinen@bartonmohealth.gov

If you need a little more help, Tina Schnelle is the mother of three grown children. She loves reading and traveling. She exclusively breastfed all three of her children for a year (or more), including one stubborn girl who would not take a bottle or pacifier. She is a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) and a certified lactation counselor (CLC). She is passionate about helping every woman reach her personal breastfeeding goals.
